The series was born from the fact that the multiple output, low-voltage power supply business is changing. Today, high-speed microprocessor circuits require low voltage outputs (0.9V, 1.8V, 2.5V and 3.3V) with tight regulation and fast transient response right at the load. These requirements cannot be provided by brick modules located a distance away from the load. The industry has addressed this problem by use of “on board” multiphase buck converters providing power right at the point of load (P.O.L. converters). The above addresses the concerns of the microprocessor circuit designer, but where does the power to the multiphase buck converters come from? The answer is the Power System.
Simply put, the Power System consists of four modules which provide an interface from the unwieldy military MIL-STD-704 & 1399 power busses with their stringent EMI and transient requirements to the benign buss voltages required by customer’s multiphase buck converters (regulated 28V & regulated 12V). The Power System consists of four modules, namely:
- A MIL-STD-461 EMI Filter with Part Number CAE650 (see package below)
- A Power Factor Correction Module with Part Number CAP600 (see package below)
- A Bulk Storage/Hold-Up Capacitor Bank with Part Number CAC600 (see package below)
- An Isolated 500 Watt DC to DC Bridge Converter with Part Number CAB500-28 (see package below).
The Power System can also power down stream COTS DC/DC converters from all manufacturers including ATC Power Systems, Inc. as it provides outputs of 12V and 28V at 500 watts. ATC Power Systems offers several modules including the PowerMil Series, the HalfPint Series, and the PowerSlim Series. Please see our standard product pages for more details.
Features of the Power System include its ability to start up negative impedance DC-to-DC Converters, even at inputs as low as 15 Vdc. This is made possible by the ’s unique multi-knee current limit circuit which provides higher output load current capability at reduced output voltages. Other features include an output bias source for customer’s monitoring and control circuits; over-voltage protection, converter shutdown (with the bias output still available), temperature shutdown, paralleling and current share capability.
Several Power Systems can be seriesed and paralleled to provide 12V, 24V, 28V, or 48V systems up to several kilowatts of output power.
We invite you to be creative and see what the Power System can do for your military power needs.

No problem, use the Power System.
NOTE: THE KEY TO THE IS THE VERY EFFICIENT 28V OUT OR 12V OUT 500 WATT FULL BRIDGE CONVERTER WHICH YIELDS EFFICIENCIES OF GREATER THAN 92% WHILE MOST OTHERS OFFER EFFICIENCIES BETWEEN 83% - 88%. ALSO, THIS MODULE HAS A UNIQUE CURRENT LIMITING SCHEME WHICH ALLOWS STARTING OF NEGATIVE INPUT IMPEDANCE DC TO DC CONVERTERS AT FULL POWER WITH STARTING INPUT VOLTAGES AS LOW AS 15 VOLTS. THIS IS A KEY FEATURE NECESSARY FOR BUSS CONVERTERS.

Not only does the Series provide the ideal interface between the military power busses and the customer’s input buss; but, it does it with extreme power efficiency. Consider the following typical application. A 3.3 Volt at 50 Amp output is needed from a single phase MIL-STD-1399 input. Using standard industry bricks and circuitry, an EMI filter would be mated with a 3.3V output DC-to-DC converter for a 99% x 75% = 74% efficient system. The same system requirements configured with the power system and a cascaded multiphase buck converter would create a 99% x 92% x 95% = 80% efficient system, at 17 less Watts of heat dissipated!
